A Hmong Family Memoir

The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir by Kao Kalia Yang

Biographical but also an attempt to tell the story of a Hmong family and their journey from Laos via Thailand to St. Paul Minnesota. Although I think it was too ambitious to combine the author's story with a history of the Hmong people, it is a powerful book. It is striking that many of these families survived and prospered in the US because they arrived here before so called welfare reform.

Stop Paying Attention

French Milk French Milk by Lucy Knisley

What a great book. Lucy describes a six week stay in Paris with her mother. Both of them facing milestone birthdays 50 and 22. The title is a play on fresh whole milk available in Paris.
Lucy has a series of cartoon strips.

If you love short stories

In the Penny Arcade In the Penny Arcade by Steven Millhauser

An incredible blend of stories from August who makes incredible animated figures, to a magical trip to a penny arcade, and "Cathay" imaginary land.

I love short stories and these are great

More from the Sandman

The Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You The Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You by Neil Gaiman

This is another fine novel from this author. It shows the complexity possible in a graphic novel. The intertwining of fantasy and reality. Not so subtle digs at contemporary culture (Barbie and Ken). As you read it you quickly realize that you can't tell which narration is "real".

The literacy sky is falling

Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is a history and a defense of punctuation. She worries that we no longer even type but just send (internet). "...it is a matter for despair to see punctuation chucked out as worthless by people who don't know the difference between who's and whose, and whose bloody automatic grammar checker can't tell the difference either."

Great debut novel

Among Other Things, I've Taken Up Smoking Among Other Things, I've Taken Up Smoking by Aoibheann Sweeney

I saw this cover on a blog devoted to book covers. It is one of several covers for this book. I loved this cover. While at my public library I saw the book. I am so glad that I read it. It is hard to believe this is her first novel.

The story has "coming of age" intertwined with loneliness. She literally grows up on an island off the coast of Maine. It is also a tale about how we develop our sexuality.

Book Review

Songs for the Missing: A Novel Songs for the Missing: A Novel by Stewart O'Nan

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
It was good...Last Night at the Lobster is a "tough act to follow". It reminded me a little of Alice Sebold's Lovely Bones. I agree with other reviewers it does remind us of the other victims...parents, siblings, friends

Hard to believe this is his first book of poetry...it is splendid
Again evidence of why poetry is the finest form of writing

The 2009 - 100+ Reading Challenge

The Elegance of the Hedgehog The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery

rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is the best book I have read so far this year. It is a funny book with a philosophical vein and lots of "insider" humor and references to long standing philosophical questions. You have to love a book that can use the word autodidact...

This summary can be found on Amazon.com.
Renée, the concierge, is witness to the lavish but vacuous lives of her numerous employers. Outwardly she conforms to every stereotype of the concierge: fat, cantankerous, addicted to television. Yet, unbeknown to her employers, Renée is a cultured autodidact who adores art, philosophy, music, and Japanese culture. With humor and intelligence she scrutinizes the lives of the building’s tenants, who for their part are barely aware of her existence.
Then there’s Paloma, a twelve-year-old genius. She is the daughter of a tedious parliamentarian, a talented and startlingly lucid child who has decided to end her life on the sixteenth of June, her thirteenth birthday. Until then she will continue behaving as everyone expects her to behave: a mediocre pre-teen high on adolescent subculture, a good but not an outstanding student, an obedient if obstinate daughter. Paloma and Renée hide both their true talents and their finest qualities from a world they suspect cannot or will not appreciate them. They discover their kindred souls when a wealthy Japanese man named Ozu arrives in the building. Only he is able to gain Paloma’s trust and to see through Renée’s timeworn disguise to the secret that haunts her. This is a moving, funny, triumphant novel that exalts the quiet victories of the inconspicuous among us.

Why I love poetry...touches on the complexity of interracial marriage..role of black soldiers in the civil war

The First Person: and Other Stories The First Person: and Other Stories by Ali Smith

rating: 5 of 5 stars
This collection reinforces my love of the short story. The stories explore (as the book jacket states) the subtle relationship between what we know and what we feel.
